I have used ScanCafe and been satisfied with the results.
In my most recent order, I requested digital of a VHS tape, put onto to a memory stick (cost $19). They advised they could not read the VHS.
They shipped me two memory sticks, both with the same photos.
I requested a refund of $19, which was refused.
I will not use ScanCafe in the future and cannot recommend their customer service.
I am not using this company again. They neglected to scan 12% of the negative packets, but returned the USB as if the job was done. If you use them: check carefully. They even lost a packet of negatives. Was a whole hassle to straighten it all out. You are trusting them to scan each and every negative, but it will never know if the scan-person got tired and just skipped a few. In my case, many folders were missing on the USB stick. This is, my opinion, a company with a quality control problem. I will not use them again.
I mailed them a book of tapes. Of the 22 double sided tapes, all of which were clear tapes of a speaker at a conference. The ScanCafe copies had poor quality audio on 14 tapes so that I could not hear what was being said. I had to listen to all the original tapes I provided in order to identify which of their recordings they made were faulty. This is a waste of my time. And this happened before.
When I asked for a refund, they refuse. They also want to charge me to redo their faulty recording! I prepaid for another order not yet shipped, and they refuse to refund my money on unused services. I can't trust their quality of service for audio tapes
Have used ScanCafe a number of times to digitize old pics and negatives. Each time, the work as been well done, timely and at a reasonable price. Perhaps most importantly, I've never had an issue with anything getting lost or damaged.
I placed an order for almost $1,000 for ScanCafe to process 35 mm slides for me into jpg files. Overall, the processing of individual slides was generally fine, but satisfaction ended there.
1. jpgs from individual trips, some decades ago, were no longer in the same chronological order even though they had been carefully bundled when mailed to Scan.
2. All the jpg files later disappeared from all four discs! When I called ScanCafe, I was just told that your order is over 60 days old and there is nothing we can do. The customer rep was well trained in how not to be helpful at all.
3. Slides that had been orderly in inconvenient slide trays are now a mess. It is difficult to describe my sense of loss caused by this indifferent company. Use someone else.
Since I posted my comments, a senior person from ScanCafe contacted me. They have since corrected the problems they could.
I sent thousands of pictures, organized by topic and ordered in a way that I would help tell a story to my family. All I have now are random pictures on CDs in these cases that are so slippery that, if they fall behind a large piece of furniture, I don't even bother to retrieve them.
I used their flat-fee value box to have them scan about 500 images. I packed the box with a combination of 35mm photos, slides, and negatives. They returned really high-resolution images on DVDs and also made them available on a website that I could share on Facebook. I liked it so much, I ordered another value kit. I will say that the wait (over a month) was rather scary (sending the pics off for so long), but they did state up front that it would take that long. I had to call customer service on one order (files missing from DVD, possibly due to my own instructions, which might have been misunderstood). I got a polite, courteous, professional CS worker--she sent me out a new, complete DVD immediately. I would use again and would definitely recommend.
I had them scan ~1600 slides a year or two ago. I am now organizing the scans and finding that 4-5 slides per hundred were simply skipped. I recommend sending only small orders. Quality not terrific, resolution not as good as when projected on a slide projection screen, and some are dark but am able to fix (lighten) in lightroom.
ScanCafe sent me a box to fill with photos after I prepaid for the ValueKit. I sent the box back with my photos for scanning and was then told it would cost more than double what I had already paid because I included too many photos. Their product information about the value kit is misleading and they choose to hide the fine print. Terrible experience!
The most important element to diversify different services is to trust their claims. Like air blowing the slides to remove dust particles that leave black marks on the images. I sent over 1000 slides to Scan Cafe and they cost 0ver $500. The slides were filled with black marks from dust. I know they didn't air blow before processing. So disappointing.
ScanCafe has a rating of 2 stars from 22 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. ScanCafe ranks 7th among Photo Scanning sites.
