For those who don't understand the Queen's English, Cockney and other British slang. The UK and USA - two countries separated by a common language!
Yes, it can cause real embarrassment. My (British) sister had an American girlfriend staying over one weekend. They were planning a day trip the next day. The visitor went a little pale when my (British) father asked 'what time she'd like to be knocked up in the morning?' He, of course, meant 'what time to wake her up by knocking on her door…'
